London, United Kingdom, August 2010 – BIBA Research, the UK-based market research specialists for the medical technology industry, have launched an independent investigation into the Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) programme across Western Europe. This investigation has been conducted using a research panel that accounts for approximately one quarter of the European institutions that offer Ventricular Assist Devices as a part of their routine programmes for heart failure. It is believed that less than 40% of cardiac surgery institutions in Western Europe carry out VAD procedures at the moment.
The main findings from the investigation show that on average VAD is used as a form of bridge therapy in 61% of cases and as a destination therapy in 39% of cases. Also, 84% of VAD procedures are currently being performed on adults, while 16% are being performed on children.
Despite the procedural volume still being relatively low, data from the panel shows that VAD procedures have grown at a double-digit rate in the past 12 months across Western Europe. Based upon specialists’ predictions, the expected increase in procedure numbers within the next 12 months is in the high single-digit end.
BIBA Medical’s VAD investigation is now available for Q2 2010 and will continue henceforth on a quarterly basis.
“Rapid ventricular assist device commercial adoption makes the area one of most dynamic categories in healthcare” – said Christopher Warren, President of Medical Investment Information Exchange and BIBA Medical’s manager for Investor Relations. “This survey provides an independent perspective on market growth, share, average selling price and usage and attitude trends. All major investors in this market will benefit from obtaining a pre-earnings season report of year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter growth from over 25 percent of the centres presently implanting these devices in Western Europe”.
BIBA’s VAD business investigation extends the company’s long-established European Cardiovascular Monitor. The Monitor tracks device consumption and institutions’ attitude towards product categories and brands within the cardiovascular space. In addition, BIBA’s European Cardiovascular Monitor covers three specific areas: percutaneous coronary interventions, cardiac surgery, and transcatheter heart valves.
